To design a 21st century media center that will provide to students, teachers and library media staff ubiquitous access to technology and the tools necessary to be creators, collaborators and researchers in the 21st century.
A conceptualization of the proposed 21st century media center can be viewed in the video below. This conceptualization is not intended to demonstrate every detail of the finished product but to provide a visual representation of the desired outcome and mission.
To obtain the goal set forth by this mission the following objectives will need to be met. These objectives have been established following the SMARTER framework.
Objective # 1
SMARTER Criteria
Within the first year of implementation, students will use the technology available in the 21st century media center to create digital products for inclusion in electronic portfolios.
Specific
Students will be expected to have a predefined, minimum number of works contained in their digital portfolio by the end of their senior year. The minimum number is adjusted based on the year of graduation as follows. Some leniency will be given to the class of 2010 since teachers will be completing staff development during the 2009-10 school year and may not be ready to fully integrate the media center into their lessons.
Graduation year 2010: 5 digital works
Graduation year 2011: 10 digital works
Graduation year 2012: 15 digital works
Graduation year 2013: 20 digital works
Measurable
Students are currently demanding more access to technology and teachers will be working to acquire the skills necessary to implement this technology into their lessons.
Acceptable
By adjusting the minimum required digital works for the amount of time a student has remaining in their career at the high school, this objective is obtainable.
Realistic
The completion of the 21st century media center will be August 2009 with full staff and student use starting upon the beginning of the 2009-10 school year. It is expected that students have at least 5 digital works in their portfolios by May 2010.
Timely
Students will be gaining much needed skills in the creation of digital products such as videos, podcasts, websites, wikis, blogs, etc. Also students will gain 21st century skills such as collaboration and creative thinking. These skills will benefit students as they move into life after high school.
Extending
The creation of digital works will allow for publication to the world via the web and feedback from peers and a wide audience. Students receiving recognition and feedback for their work rather then just a grade handwritten on the top of their paper will be far more rewarding. Also, producing a digital portfolio will give students a way to demonstrate to colleges and potential employers their skills and abilities.

Objective # 2
SMARTER Criteria
Within the first year of implementation, teachers will incorporate the use of the technology resources available in the 21st century media center into their lesson plans and student assessments.
Specific
Teachers, through the submission of their lesson plans to building administration, will incorporate a minimum of one lesson plan per quarter that utilizes some aspect of the 21st century media center.
Measurable
Teachers have often expressed concerns regarding their desire to incorporate technology into lessons but not having equal access to the necessary equipment. The 21st century media center provides access to all teachers and the requirements of this objective are an extension of the current demands of many high school teachers.
Acceptable
By providing proper staff development and an organized scheduling process for using the 21st century media center this objective is realistic.
Realistic
By the end of the 2011 school year teachers will have the necessary number of lessons which utilize the 21st century media center.
Timely
All high school teachers will now have access to equipment and technology that is currently only available to a portion of the school. This availability will extend teacher abilities to integrate technology into lessons and provide the opportunity for students to gain 21st century skills.
Extending
Staff will be helping students build their digital portfolios and gaining skills necessary for success after high school. Also, extrinsic rewards may also be available in the future in the form of contact hours for license renewal and/or graduate credit for participating in training or staff development opportunities.

Objective # 3
SMARTER Criteria
Library staff will learn the skills necessary to operate all 21st century media center equipment, manage the scheduling by teachers, and offer training to staff and students on equipment usage.
Specific
Library staff will demonstrate a scheduling system. Also, all library staff will have receive training on media center equipment, demonstrate equipment use and propose a schedule of staff development offerings for high school teachers.
Measurable
Library staff has been involved throughout the planning process and are supportive of the implementation of the 21st century media center.
Acceptable
There are five library media staff members. With this number of staff and through a division of responsibilities (training, scheduling, professional development) obtaining this objective is realistic.
Realistic
Scheduling systems will be demonstrated by the onset of the 2010 school year. Library staff training and teacher staff development offerings will be available by October 2010.
Timely
The knowledge gained by all library staff will extend their personal capabilities and assist their movement toward becoming 21st century library / media specialists.
Extending
The implementation of the 21st century media center will further establish the library media staff as an essential component to the success of both teachers and students. Through the management of the resources and the training and professional development offerings, the high school library media staff will make themselves highly valued.
